Internet Domain Names

As a business, if you have any intention of being on the Internet, a domain name is a crucial role in securing your image as a professional entity - a web-site accessible via a URL like http://www.users.example.com/~username/some-folder/index.htm will not suffice!  Ideally your domain name should be short but descriptive, for example: power-products.com or super-services.co.uk - best of all, your company's name.  Here's how the system works:

UK Meaning (UK only) Worldwide Meaning
.co.uk Company (General) .com Commercial
.me.uk Personal (i.e. consumers) .biz Business
.net.uk Network (ISP's etc) .net Network (ISP's etc)
.org.uk Non-profit Organisation .org Non-profit Organisation
.ltd.uk Limited Company (conditions apply) .coop Cooperatives
.plc.uk Public Limited Company (conditions apply)
.gov.uk Government (conditions apply)
.sch.uk School (conditions apply)

Basically, if you have a .uk TLD (top level domain) you're generally thought of as being based in the UK.  If you have a .com TLD etc, you're generally thought of a being based in the USA or moreover a worldwide entity.  In light of this, some search engines will section you off accordingly, so you may wish to secure all TLD's applicable to your business - this may include different country codes like .de (Germany) or .fr (France).  There are many other types of TLD's available, including the more recent .info and .biz - we've short-listed below the most applicable TLD's to our clients, but please contact us you require a bespoke solution.
